It was Henry who made the most remarkable find in these weeks of steady digging; a large knob or scepter handle of the purest crystal sculptured into a marvelous lion's head. When he showed his prize to Sophia at the nine o'clock break, he exclaimed:

"It's the first crystal we have come upon. There were plenty of lions in the mountains above the Troad. Homer speaks of them. He could not possibly have described so excellently the characteristics of this animal had he not had frequent opportunity of watching them."

It was the beginning of a series of startling hour-by-hour discoveries which enthralled them. Close to the lion's head they found a splendidly cut hexagon of the purest crystal; then a pyramid of black, white and blue streaked marble, the first of its kind they had unearthed. A little lower in the trench they found mixing bowls, the larger ones having four handles and standing two feet high.

"You're working in someone's kitchen," Sophia commented that evening. "All we need to find now is a lamb roasting on a spit."

From thirteen to twenty-six feet down, in addition to coming upon house walls, one with a corner joining at right angles, they unearthed a wealth of vases, each in its own curious form. Sophia marked for special attention a brilliant black vase with two breasts and two handles. She also persuaded Henry to let one of his men build storks' nests on the roofs of both the stone and wooden houses. They were plenti-
